SMARTMATH.ORGUsing Technology to Improve
Instruction
OUR GOALS
The Math Department at FHS is committed to improving mathematical education. We work as a team and share ideas on a regular basis. Each faculty member is willing to share experience and expertise for the good of the whole department.
In 1995 we implemented the use of the Farragut Math Lab. The lab has proved to be an invaluable tool for evaluating student understanding and to providing individual instruction. Student attitude toward the lab is good and students report that activities help them to understand.
In 2003 we broadened the use of technology by integrating the use of computers in the individual classrooms. A number of teachers began using Smartboard technology. Teachers participated in cooperative professional development and learned introductory html scripting so that class information including syllabi, related web links and notes created on the Smartboard could be posted to the web. Students have reported overwhelmingly that access to class notes on line is extremely valuable.
The department has conducted fund raising events to partially fund this initiative. The domain name http://www.smarmath.org has been used to provide students with an easy way of accessing materials and resources.
