The Internet as a Resource for Students

The Internet provides students with many opportunities for learning and enjoying mathematics. Using the Internet as a link to mathematics education could spark the natural curiosity and excitement about mathematics which will enable students to view mathematics as an indispensable tool with which to solve real world problems. Using the Internet in the classroom will also help students to learn computer and technology skills which will be necessary in the 21st Century.

Sites on the Internet which enable students to learn about mathematics, ask on-line questions about math topics, to get homework help, or to play math games include the following:

Do Math
"Do Math ... and you can do anything." This site was created by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics to encourage students to explore the beauty and utility of mathematics.

WebMath
WebMath was created so that students could connect to the Internet from their home or school, type in problems with which they need help, and instantly receive hints or solutions to their problems. Topics on this site include graphing of points, lines and circles, operations with polynomials, factoring, exponents, reducing fractions, simplifying expressions, word problems, percents, radicals, roots, solving linear and quadratic equations, and trigonometry.

A+ Math
The A+ Math This web site was developed to help students improve math skills interactively. Students can play games like Matho and Concentration, test math skills using the interactive math flash cards, or get homework help. The mathematics at this site includes topics from middle school through Algebra I.

Ask Dr. Math
Dr. Math is a site where students from elementary to high school can search the archives for answers to their mathematics questions. They can also ask Dr. Math to answer questions by submitting their questions using an on-line form or by sending in e-mail. Answers are sent back to the student by e-mail. The site includes an archive of questions and answers that students have submitted. This archive is searchable and organized by grade level from elementary through high school.

Ask Mr. Calculus.
The purpose of this site is to enable students to get help with problems from classes in calculus, trigonometry, geometry, or algebra. Students can email Mr. Calculus with one question per day. Students in calculus can also see typical questions from the advanced placement Calculus AB or Calculus BC exam.

The Mathematics Forum
Math Forum is an excellent site for students. It offers a variety of topics for students including Math Problems, Puzzles, Tip & Tricks. Students can solve problems involving critical thinking, work mathematics puzzles, solve mathematics problems and puzzles from the site’s Internet list or check out the Divisibility Rules for numbers 3-13. The site also contains a search engine so that students can Search for Math on the Internet
