Sites on the Internet involving lessons and activities for Algebra I include the following:

Math Archives
The Math Archives Algebra section contains links to several sites about topics included in the Algebra I curriculum. The Types of Functions page contains definitions and examples of each type of function studied in Algebra I.

21st Century Problem Solving
This site, which is located at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, provides examples of solutions to problems using reliable problem solving methods, including an interactive approach on some examples. There is also discussion of the principles of reliable problem solving. This site includes a large number of solved problems in mathematics, physics and chemistry. The main focus is on pre-college algebra.

Lessons by Susan Boone
Susan Boone's lessons on the Internet include lesson plans and activities for real world application problems for use in our classrooms. These creative mathematics projects include several which require students to search the Internet to obtain solutions to the problems. One such problem is the A Functional Housing Market, in which students must use linear regression to model housing prices as a function of the living area of the house. The project is linked to outside resources, such as real estate companies, so that students must search to find their data for use in solving the problems presented in the project. Other similar projects include The Internet Pizza Server and the Pop Clock, which is a study of the trends in population which would allow predictions of future population. To complete this project, students use sites on the Internet such as the U.S. Census Bureau. Boone has included other such projects at her site.

Interactive Algebra
Java applets allow students to practice solving equations, factoring, graphing lines and determining slope. Each category contains multiple levels. The applet generates random problems which students work on paper. Answers can be checked when the student has completed the problem. Hints are also provided. Teachers could have students use this site in the school's computer lab. Students could also use this site at home.

LESSON PLANS AND ACTIVITIES FOR ALGEBRA II

apple for the teacher

Sites on the Internet involving lessons and activities for Algebra II include the following:

Office for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education at the University of Illinois (MSTE)
This site contains approximately fifty Internet-based mathematics lessons. It also includes a searchable database of K-12 math lessons and software. There are several java applets which are used for simulation of math topics. The probability simulation of the "cliff hanger" using java applets is an excellent activity for the study of probability. The Parabola java applet provides an excellent simulation of the geometric definition of the parabola. This site includes other simulations as well as lesson plans and activities.

Conic Sections
This site contains definitions, examples, formulas, and applications of conic sections which include the hyperbola, ellipse, parabola and circle. Using the graphics from this site will enable students to understand many interesting properties of conics. This project is designed to not only educate, but also to entertain students with the many animations.

The Ellipse Game
Students practice on finding the foci of an ellipse by clicking on the spot where they think one of the foci is located. The Ellipse Game also provides feedback. This site is sponsored by the La Trobe University Mathematics Department.

Exponential and Logarithmic functions
This site contains definitions and examples of logarithmic and exponential functions as well as the graphs and properties of each. This topic is an Algebra II topic which is new to the students.

Probability
This site contains a simulation of the famous "The Monty Hall Dilemma", an application of probability which was discussed in Parade Magazine . This site enables students and teachers to attempt to solve a problem related to probability theory which is a branch of mathematics involving the study of random events.
