Graduation is right around the corner—can you believe it? We received only a few scholarship opportunities this month, which are listed below. Three quick reminders:

1. Please bring me a copy of ANY scholarship award letters you receive, even if you do not plan to accept the offer. All amounts will be included in the grand total of offers for the Class of 2008. Also, be sure to add your offers to “the boards” that are up in Guidance!

2. If you have not paid for transcripts that have been sent, be sure to stop by guidance & pay the secretary—otherwise a hold will be placed on your files & your diploma will be withheld. If you are unsure if you have outstanding transcript debt, see Mrs. Wharton in guidance.

3. If you STILL have not turned in your medical release form for AP testing, please do so immediately. Students who do not submit the form will not be allowed into the testing site.

Mitsui USA – Four $2500 scholarships will be awarded to qualifying students. Applicants must have resided in Tennessee for the past five years, have an unweighted GPA of 3.0 or better, have involvement in community volunteer activities and/or leadership roles, and have a personal interest in multi-cultural and international affairs. Applications may be downloaded at www.jastn.com.

Blacks in Government – Scholarships will be awarded based on academic excellence or financial need. A brief essay is also required. The deadline to apply is May 2; see me for an application form.

National Association of Purchasing Management – Two $1000 awards will be given to students who plan to major in business or logistics, have a minimum 2.5 GPA, and attend a publicly funded Tennessee college. Deadline to apply is April 18. See me for an instructional sheet.

Henry Naff Foundation – Five $1000 scholarships will be awarded to students with true financial need and who have performed well scholastically in high school. FHS can nominate only three students for this award. If you’re interested, see me ASAP for an application.

Lenoir City Utilities Board - $1000 awards will be given to selected engineering or computer science majors. Letters of recommendation are required. See me for a form. Deadline is May 5.

Engineering and Computer Scholars Program – Students who plan to attend UTC and declare a major in any of the engineering disciplines they offer may be eligible to receive up to $10,000 in a need-based scholarship. Simply download the application at www.utc.edu/nsfscholars and follow the supporting instructions. Hurry---the deadline is April 15.

Ebony Network – This award provides $500 to a deserving East Tennessee student who plans to attend any Historical Black College of University, has a minimum 2.5 GPA, and has financial need. An essay is required--see me for an instruction sheet before the April 19 deadline.

Scholarship Experts – One $5000 scholarship will be awarded to the student who best responds in 250 words or less to the following topic: “How will a $5000 scholarship for education make a difference in your life?” Apply online by April 30 at http://www.scholarshipexperts.com/apply.htx .

Balanced Man Scholarship – Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity will be awarding up to five $750 scholarships based on athleticism, leadership, scholarship, and gentlemanliness. These awards are for incoming freshmen at The University of Memphis only. May 20 is the deadline—see me for an application form.

Technology Scholarship - The Innovation Valley Technology Council will be awarding $2500 scholarships to two Knox County seniors. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, show academic promise and achievement, and plan to enroll in a technology-related curriculum at a local college. An essay is also required. May 9 is the application deadline—forms available in guidance.

Scholarship Opportunities:

Earn and Learn Program – High school seniors can earn cash for college while gaining hands-on work experience in their career field through intern positions. Students who will be pursuing a degree in environmental science, engineering, computer science, mathematics, or a science-related field may qualify. Intern positions vary from two to eight weeks in duration, and students can earn a minimum of $250 per week, in addition to a scholarship award of no less than $1500. Applications are available at http://www.eteba.org or from me. Hurry---deadline is March 31.

C. B. Brown Scholarship – This cosmetology award at the Tennessee School of Beauty is valued at $8,995 and is available to students wishing to pursue a career in the field of cosmetology. An application and personal interview are required. See me for an application form. Deadline to apply is March 31.

Beta Theta Boule’ Foundation – Graduating minority students with a minimum 2.75 GPA may be eligible for one of six awards ranging from $500 to $1000. See me for an application before the March 15 deadline.

The Appointed Man Scholarship – Students interested in attending Tennessee Tech may be eligible for one of two $500 awards—one for academic performance and one for athletic excellence. See me for an application—no deadline was given.

Regal Cinema Scholarship – Here’s the one you’ve been waiting for!!! Your 3.0 or better GPA and an essay about how a movie has affected you or touched your life could win you a check for $3000! See me for details! Deadline is Friday, April 4.

Scholarship for Academic Service – This $1500 award from Roane State is open to students with a 2.9 or higher GPA. Hurry on this one--applications must be received by March 14. See me for a form.

Channon Gail Christian Memorial Scholarship – This award in the amount of $2000 is available only to FHS students. An essay and a letter of recommendation are required. Deadline is March 31, 2008. See me for an application.

Scholarship Experts – Your response to the question “How will a $5000 scholarship for education make a difference in you life?” could actually get you a $5000 scholarship! Apply online at http://www.scholarshipexperts.com/apply.htx by the April 30, 2008 deadline.

Fifth Third Bank – Ten $530 scholarships will be awarded to seniors submitting an online form at www.53EducationLending.com/TheRoad . (No essay requirement!) No deadline was given.

Society of Women Engineers – Females with a 3.5 GPA who plan to enroll in an engineering or computer science program may qualify for this award, which ranges from $1000 to $10,000. For additional information or to apply, go to www.swe.org before the May 15 deadline.

Jackie Robinson Foundation – Awards of up to $7500 will be made to qualifying minority students who have scores of 1000/SAT (M & CR) or 21/ACT, display leadership potential and have participated in community service. Applicants must also demonstrate financial need and be US citizens. Apply online only at www.jackierobinson.org by March 31.

Seniors: Listed below are the latest offers. Note that several have March deadlines, so act quickly if you wish to apply. Remember to complete your FAFSA form as soon as possible—it is required by most colleges and serves as your application for the lottery scholarship. Also, please bring me any scholarship offers you receive, whether you plan to accept them or not.

Student View Scholarship – Awards ranging from $500 to $3000 will be given to students chosen from their responses to an online survey about local colleges. No minimum ACT, no essay, no lengthy application forms! Go to www.student-view.com before April 22 and complete a 15-20 minute survey for your chance to win.

Basler Incentive Scholarship – Awarded annually to an Engineering Technology major at ETSU, the primary criteria for this $13,000 scholarship is not academic achievement, but the student’s demonstrated desire and motivation to complete personal goals and his/her definite need. Applications will be accepted through March 28. See me for a form.

Biology Scholarship – Four scholarships, ranging from $500 to $1500 will be awarded to incoming freshmen at MTSU. Selection will be based on a competitive exam covering biological principles and concepts. The exam will be given on the MTSU campus on Thursday, April 3. Register by calling the Biology Department at 615/898-2847. There is no registration fee.

Elizabeth Buford Shepherd Scholarship – Academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and financial need may earn you this $1500 award. Requirements include an essay, a financial information sheet, and a counselor recommendation sheet. The deadline is May 1. Qualified students should see me for an application form.

Humphreys Merit Scholarship – This prestigious award at The University of Memphis provides the recipient $9000 per year, a laptop computer, and a $2000 study abroad stipend. Go to www.enrollment.memphis.edu/scholarships for more information before the March 1 deadline.

Scholarship Experts – “Explain what one characteristic you have that will make you successful in college.” Your online response to this directive could earn you a $2500 scholarship. Apply at http://www.scholarshipexperts.com by March 24 to be considered.

Rotary Club of Knoxville – This renewable $3000 scholarship requires a brief essay, two letters of recommendation, and a copy of your Student Aid Report (from the FAFSA). Deadline is March 31—see me for an application form.

Donald Scott McMurray Golf Scholarship – This scholarship will be awarded to hardworking, committed high school senior golfers who want to attend college. A 100-word essay, a letter of recommendation, and a resume are required to apply. The deadline is April 11—see me for an application form.

I know many of you have received positive news from your college of choice over the holidays, and letters are coming in daily. Congratulations on your achievements! A few reminders:

• Complete your FAFSA form as soon as possible! This is your lottery scholarship application, as well as your application for financial aid. Online submission is encouraged. Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov to apply.
• If you plan to attend UTK and have not submitted your scholarship application, NOW is the time to do so in order to be considered for departmental scholarships. The essay is not required for those applying by the Feb. 1 deadline.
• Bring me ANY scholarship offers you receive, whether you plan to accept them or not. All offers will be included in the total for the class of 2008.

Girls Going Places – Female students who demonstrate entrepreneurship, have taken steps toward financial independence, have initiative to start a new business, and have made a difference in her school/community may be eligible for this award. Amounts range from $1000 to $10,000. A personal essay and a recommendation from an adult nominator are required. Postmark deadline is February 15. Download an application at www.girlsgoingplaces.com or see me for a copy.

Flying J Scholarship – Seniors with a minimum 3.0 GPA may be eligible to receive this $2000 award. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership, participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, an outside appraisal, and a statement of educational and career goals. Financial need, as calculated by Scholarship America, must be demonstrated for the student to receive an award. Completed applications must be postmarked no later than March 1. See me for an application form if you meet the above requirements.

BWXT Y-12 Scholarship – This one-time $1500 award will go to qualified seniors wishing to pursue careers in science, math, or pre-engineering fields at either Roane State or Pellissippi State Community College. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and be US citizens. Deadline is March 14; see me for an application or go to www.easttennesseefoundation.org to print one.

Knoxville Business Association Scholarship – Students who plan to pursue a degree in a business-related field may wish to apply for this award, which is worth $7000. Basic requirements include a 3.0 GPA, US citizenship, financial need, and interest in a business-related field of study. Deadline is February 29; see me for an application or go to www.easttennesseefoundation.org to print one.

Michael David Greene Memorial Scholarship – This $1500 award is limited to FHS seniors who are (or have been) a member of the FHS band, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and exhibit the qualities of kindness, courage, determination, and dignity. Your completed application must be postmarked no later than March 14. See me for the form or download one at www.easttennesseefoundation.org.

Gordon & Agnes Cobb Scholarship – This renewable $10,000 award will be given to students selected for academic promise and achievement, desire to pursue a career in a health care and/or medical-related field, evidence of a strong work and volunteer history, and financial need (copy of your SAR from the FAFSA is required). Deadline is April 4—see me for an application or download a copy at www.easttennesseefoundation.org .

Scholarship Experts – You could win one of five $1000 scholarships with your 250 word response to the following: “Create a Top Ten List of the ten reasons you should get this scholarship”. Applicants must apply online by January 31 at http://www.scholarshipexperts.com/apply.htx .

Monsanto Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship – This one-time $1500 award will be made to 100 seniors who plan to pursue a career in an agriculture-related field. Applications must be submitted online no later than February 15, and are available at www.monsanto.com or www.ffa.org .
Knox County Council PTA Scholarship – Several $500 scholarships will be awarded to seniors who need financial aid, are academically qualified for college admission, and enroll in college by the first semester of the 2008-2009 school year. Applications must be RECEIVED by February 11, so if you qualify, see me ASAP for an application.

Tennessee State UAW CAP Council Scholarship – Four one-year scholarships ranging in value from $400 to $1200 will be awarded, based on an essay entitled “What Organized Labor Means to Me”. Essays must be postmarked by April 11. See me for essay guidelines.

Best Buy Scholarship – 1500 one-time scholarships of $1500 will be awarded to seniors across the nation. Recipients will be selected based on academic achievement, volunteerism effort, and work experience. Apply online at www.bestbuy.com/scholarships by February 15.

Hampton Memorial Scholarship – This renewable $1500 scholarship will go to selected seniors who are Tennessee residents, have financial need, and plan to attend college on a full-time basis. Applicants should be in the top 10% of their class, and their EFC on the FAFSA must be less than $18,000. Farragut High School can nominate only one student for this award. If you qualify and wish to be considered, please see me no later than February 29.

Edscholar Program – This award is designed to recognize and reward outstanding students seeking higher education in Tennessee. Applicants should demonstrate leadership and community service, score a minimum 23 on the ACT or have a 3.25 GPA, and demonstrate financial need based on results from the FAFSA. Participating colleges & links to their Edscholar applications are at http://www.edsouth.org .

Organization of Chinese Americans – Up to sixty $2000 scholarships will be awarded to those who identify as East Asian, Filipino, Pacific Islander, South Asian, or Southeast Asian students. Applicants must be permanent residents or US citizens, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, demonstrate financial need, have high achievement, and are the first member of their family to attend college in the US. Deadline to apply is April 18. See me for additional information and an application packet.

Sammy (Got Milk?) Awards – A $7500 scholarship and a weekend at Disney World will be given to the 25 winners of this award. Nominees will be judged on five criteria: academic performance, athletic excellence, leadership, community service, and milk experience. Applicants can nominate themselves, or family members or other adults can nominate students. Applications will be accepted only online at bodybymilk.com until March 7.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund – Over a dozen different scholarships for Hispanic and minority students are listed on this helpful website. Go to http://www.hsf.net/Scholarships to check eligibility requirements and deadlines.

KeyBank Scholarship – No GPA requirements & no essay are necessary for this one! A $2500 award will be given away each month until August, 2008. Enter for your chance to win at key.com/enter .

National Commission for Cooperative Education – The NCCE will award 185 merit scholarships of $6000 each to students who plan to participate in cooperative education at one of the NCCE Partner Colleges (Drexel, Johnson & Wales, Kettering, Northeastern, Pace, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Cincinnati, University of Toledo, and Wentworth Institute). Applicants should have a 3.5 or better GPA, and must complete the National Co-op Scholarship Program application. Deadline to apply is February 15. An application is available at www.co-op.edu .

AFC Giveaway Sweepstakes – AFC, a leading student loan company, will award two $5000 scholarships and sixteen $2500 scholarships this year. Winners will be selected by random drawing in early June. Apply online at http://www.afclending.com no later than May 31.

Reminder: If you plan to apply to a college that has a deadline at any time in January and there is a form I must complete, your form must be submitted to me no later than Monday, December 3—NO EXCEPTIONS! I anticipate many will be turned in and I’ll be working to complete them before the holiday break. Meanwhile, the following may interest you:


• Note to students planning to apply to UT: If you did not submit your UT scholarship application by the Nov. 1 deadline, you can still submit it until Feb. 1 to be considered for any departmental awards that may be available. While you DO have to complete the scholarship application to receive funds, you DO NOT have to write the essay—that was only for Nov. 1 applicants.
• FAFSA – This form is required if you plan to attend almost any college, and also serves as the lottery scholarship application. The earliest date you can file is January 1, 2008. Online submission is strongly encouraged by the Federal Student Aid Office. A representative from the UT Financial Aid Office will be conducting a FAFSA workshop for parents at 7:00 PM on Thursday, January 10, in the FHS library. He will provide information and answer questions about the FAFSA. Parents and students are encouraged to attend this informational meeting.

Leadership Scholarship-This $1000 award at Tennessee Tech will be awarded to a number of entering freshmen who have demonstrated outstanding leadership potential. Deadline to apply is Dec. 15. The application is online at http://www.tntech.edu/admissions/apply_online.html.

Stonecipher Mathematics Scholarship – This $2000 Tennessee Tech award will go to math majors who maintain a 3.0 GPA. Apply online at http://www.tntech.edu/admissions/ .

Berea College – Scholarships ranging from $60,000 to $90,000 will be awarded to students who rank in the top 20% of their class, have ACT scores ranging from 20-30, and demonstrate financial need (income of $45,000 or less). If you wish to be nominated, please see me.

Chancellor’s Scholarship-Johnson & Wales applicants have an opportunity to earn renewable scholarships valued from $7500 to full tuition. There is no separate scholarship application form, but you must complete the application for admission to be considered for an award. Apply online at www.jwu.edu . No deadline given.

American Cancer Society-Scholarships will be awarded to young cancer survivors who plan to pursue an undergraduate degree from an accredited university. Eligible applicants will have had a diagnosis of cancer before age 21, a GPA of at least 2.5, and must take a minimum of 12 hours per semester once enrolled in college. Qualified applicants should contact the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 for an application packet. Application deadline is February 1, 2008.

Alcoa Sons & Daughters Scholarship Program - Sons, daughters, and stepchildren of full-time Alcoa employees may be eligible to apply for this renewable $1500 award. Apply online by January 16 at www.act.org/alcoafoundation .

NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award – Students who demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit and initiative through starting their own business, participating in DECA or FBLA, and who have exceeded academic standards may be eligible to receive an award ranging from $1000 to $10,000. Apply online by February 11 at www.goonline.cc . The access key is NFIB.

Patrick Kerr Skateboard Scholarship – Students who have actively promoted skateboarding in their community will be given special consideration for this award, which ranges from $1000 to $5000. Applicants should have a minimum 2.5 GPA, be a skateboarder and US citizen, and enroll in a full-time undergraduate program by fall term 2008. For application instructions, see me or go to www.skateboardscholarship.org . Application deadline is April 20, 2008.

Vegetarian Resource Group – VRG will award two scholarships of $5000 each. Applicants will be judged on having shown compassion, courage, and a strong commitment to promoting a peaceful world through a vegetarian diet and lifestyle. See me for an application; deadline is Feb. 20, 2008.

Marsh Scholarship Program – The purpose of this program is to offer financial aid to deserving Eastern Surfing Association student surfers wishing to continue their education. If you are a member, see me for an application form. Deadline to apply is May 15, 2008.

President’s Emerging Leaders Scholarship – This award at Austin Peay University is valued at $3000 per year. Applicants should have a 3.5 or higher GPA, a minimum ACT score of 24, and evidence of leadership qualities. References and interviews are required. Apply online at www.apsu.edu/scholarships no later than February 8, 2008 to be considered.

Next Step Scholarship – Enter this sweepstakes to win up to $20,000 in college tuition. Go to nextSTEPmag.com/WinFreeTuition to enter.

University of Northern Iowa – 20 Presidential Scholarships worth $28,000 each will be awarded to incoming freshmen who have a 29 or better on the ACT and rank in the top 10% of their class. Students are encouraged to apply by Dec. 15. See uni.edu/honors/scholarships for application details.

PASQUA Scholarship – This nuclear and radiological engineering scholarship at UT is valued at $2000. If this is your intended major and if UT is on your list, see me for an application form.

Honors-in-Discipline – This ETSU program provides scholarships that cover full tuition and fees, dorm housing and meal plans, and a book allowance for four years. Minimum qualifications include 29+ACT or 1130+SAT, and a 3.5 GPA. Visit www.etsu.edu/honors/university/default.asp to request an application form.

Presidential Scholarship – Ohio Wesleyan University offers this full-tuition award valued at $31,500 to students demonstrating outstanding academic achievement. Past recipients have an average ACT score of 33. Additional scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $23,000 are also available. Learn more at www.owu.edu .

Army ROTC – This scholarship at UT covers full tuition, fees, book allowance, and living expenses for four years to qualifying students. Requirements include a minimum 2.5 GPA and a 19 on the ACT. Navy ROTC – In the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps, you choose the college or university, and the Navy pays the bill. You will receive up to $180,000 for tuition, fees, and textbooks. To learn more, visit nrotc.navy.com .

Left Handed Scholarship – So many of you have asked about this one, I felt compelled to share the information with you. The Beckley Scholarship is $1000 and is awarded to left-handed students who will be attending Juniata College in Huntington, PA. For more information, write to: Office of Student Financial Planning, Juniata College, 1700 Moore St., Huntington, PA 16652.

Writers of the Future Contest – Fiction/fantasy writers are encouraged to apply. First prize is $1000, second prize is $750, and third prize is $500. The contest is held quarterly. For details, visit www.writersofthefuture.com .

Careers & Colleges – Log onto www.careersandcolleges.com and register for a chance to win a $10,000 scholarship. Winners will be selected in a random drawing in May, 2008.

Minority Teaching Fellows Program – To encourage talented minority students from Tennessee to enter the field of teaching, this award provides $5000 per year to qualifying students who pursue teacher certification at an eligible Tennessee institution. Applicants must be a minority, a US citizen, and have a minimum 2.75 GPA and at least an 18 on the ACT. Application deadline is April 15, 2008. Ned McWherter Scholarship – Academically superior students who plan to attend a Tennessee university, have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.5, and a minimum 29 ACT score may be eligible to receive this $6000 per year award. Go to www.CollegePaysTN.com to apply or see me for forms. The deadline is Feb. 15, 2008.

Robert C. Byrd Scholarship – The amount of this award varies ($3000 last year) and the money can be used at any college in the US. Applicants must have a 3.5 GPA OR a GPA of 3.0 and a 24 ACT score. Recipients are randomly selected from the pool of qualified applicants. To apply, go to www.CollegePaysTN.com or see me for a form. Deadline is March 1, 2008.

American Quarter Horse Foundation – If you are a member of AQHF, you may be eligible for a number of scholarships for the nursing, veterinary, or journalism/communication field. See me before the January 2 deadline for additional information and an application form.

Wal-Mart Community Scholarship – Each Walmart location will give two non-renewable $1000 awards to qualifying applicants. Minimum GPA is 2.5. Apply online by January 14, 2008 at www.walmartfoundation.org . The access key is SWCS, and you will need the store number of the location to which you wish to apply.

Civic Engagement Scholarship – Oglethorpe University will award three $105,000 scholarships to selected applicants. Requirements include active involvement in community service and leadership development activities, a 3.0 minimum GPA, two teacher recommendations, and a 500-word essay. AXA Achievement – The AXA Foundation will award over $725,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors across the country. Applicants must demonstrate ambition and drive, determination to set and reach goals, respect for self, family, and community, and the ability to succeed in college. Download an application at www.axa-achievement.com. Deadline to apply is February 15, 2008.

Hope each of you met your November 1 deadline for college applications! As you apply for various scholarships, keep the deadlines in mind—don’t wait until the last minute to start your applications and essays. Also, a reminder: If any college you plan to apply to has a deadline at any time in January, and there is a form I must complete, your form must be submitted to me NO LATER THAN DECEMBER 3. NO EXCEPTIONS! Please note that is only a few weeks from now.

Scholarship Experts – If you could take one superpower with you to college, what would it be and why? Your 250 word answer could win you $1500 for college. Apply online at www.scholarshipexperts.com by November 12.

Entrepreneurial Scholarship – If you own your own business and have at least one part-time employee, you could be eligible for a $40,000 scholarship from the McKelvey Foundation. Apply online at mckelveyfoundation.org by Jan. 15.

Navy ROTC Scholarship – If you have at least a 22 on the ACT and are a US citizen, you could be eligible for up to $180,000 toward tuition, fees, and living expenses. Scholarships require a four-year commitment. For more information, go to nrotc.navy.com .

George Jenkins Scholarship – Worth more than $40,000 annually, this award at the University of Miami will be given to applicants who have a personal history of overcoming adversity, high financial need, and academic merit. Applicants must be nominated; see me for additional information. Deadline to apply is December 1.

US Bank – Thirty $1000 scholarships will be awarded in a random drawing. There is no minimum GPA requirement and no essay is required! Go to usbank.com/studentbanking before February, 2008 to apply.

National Co-op Scholarship Program – Over 185 scholarships are available from a variety of colleges including Drexel, Johnson & Wales, Kettering, Northeastern, University of Cincinnati, and Rochester Institute of Technology. For information and application go to www.co-op.edu before the February 15 deadline.

Johnson Scholarship Program – This new award at Washington and Lee University will go to approximately 44 recipients who have excellent academic credentials and a demonstrated record of leadership and civic involvement. The minimum award a student will receive covers tuition and room & board. Students wishing to be considered should submit the Johnson Scholarship application, available with Part Two of W&L’s admission application, or apply online at admissions.wlu.ed. December 15 is the deadline.

William T. Young Scholarship – Students who apply to Transylvania University by December 1 will be considered for this award and are given priority consideration for other merit-based scholarships. Apply online at www.transy.edu .

James Edward Oglethorpe Scholarship – Applicants with a minimum 3.5 GPA, a 25 on the ACT, and a superior record of leadership could be eligible for scholarships ranging from $24,000 to $105,000 at Oglethorpe University. For application procedures and deadlines, email their admissions office at admission@oglethorpe.edu .

Ramsey Scholars – The deadline for applying for this award at the University of Georgia is November 15--Award amount is $7000 per year for out-of-state students. Apply online at http://www.admissions.uga.edu .

Vanderbilt University – To be considered for any of Vanderbilt’s merit scholarships, students must now submit the Vanderbilt Scholarship application along with the application for freshman admission. Scholarships include the Ingram, Chancellor’s, and the Cornelius Vanderbilt, a new premier scholarship recognizing outstanding academic achievement. Additional information is available online at www.vanderbilt.edu/scholarships.

Presidential Scholarship – This renewable award at High Point University is open to incoming freshmen and has a total value of $28,000, plus a $1000 stipend to help cover study abroad expenses. The deadline to apply is December 20; the online application is at www.highpoint.edu/presidential.

TCA/NRMCA – Your 600 word essay about concrete could result in a $5000 scholarship. The deadline is Nov. 27—see me for details.

Burger King Scholars – Seven hundred $1000 scholarships will be awarded to students who have a 2.5 GPA, are involved in community service, demonstrate financial need, and work at least 15 hours per week. To apply, go to www.bk.com/scholars. Deadline is February 15.

Presidential Scholarship at Boston University – Academically gifted students interested in a career as an educator are eligible for this award, which provides full tuition for four years of undergraduate study at the School of Education. Applicants should be in the top 2% of their class, have an ACT score of 36, and a GPA of 3.9. For additional information, visit them online at www.bu.edu/admissions/apply/scholar_school.html .

Latin Scholarship at Boston University – Students who score highest on an examination of Latin and the history and culture of ancient Rome are eligible to receive one of several four-year awards ranging from half to full tuition. Recipients’ average GPA is 3.8, and most rank in the top 2% of their class. To learn more, go to www.bu.edu/classics/contest .

Grote Chemistry Scholarship – Eligibility for this $14,000 award at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga includes a 3.5 GPA, a 26 on the ACT, and a plan to major in chemistry. See me for an application form; deadline is March 1, 2008.

The Fountainhead – Your essay on Ayn Rand’s book could earn you money for college. Prizes range from $50 to $10,000. The deadline is April 25, 2008. Submit your essay online at www.aynrand.org/contests .

Rhodes College Fellowships – Awards ranging from $2000 to $150,000 are available to qualified students. For more information, visit their website at www.rhodes.edu .

Gates Millennium Scholars – Minority students with a minimum 3.3 GPA, outstanding leadership abilities, a record of participation in community service, significant financial need and meeting the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria may be eligible for this award. Recipients of this award will have an opportunity to attend the college of their choice for up to five years in any discipline at the undergraduate level. Qualified students should see me before the January 11 deadline, as the application is lengthy.

Distinction Scholarship – This award at Indiana University is for out-of-state applicants who have a SAT score of 1300 or above (ACT of 29 or above) and a minimum GPA of 3.75. The value of the award is $32,000 over four years. Students are automatically considered when they apply for admission, and no separate application is required. Sooooooo….if you have been considering Indiana University, now would be a good time to apply!

Knoxville Post Office Credit Union Scholarship – Applicants must have a savings account, checking account, and a debit card at the Knoxville Post Office Credit Union to qualify for a $1000 scholarship. See me for an application; deadline is February 1, 2008.

Many of you have begun sending in your college applications. Just a reminder to make sure you bring in the counselor/school report section for me to complete, if your application includes one. For those of you applying to UTK, remember the early action deadline is November 1! This month’s scholarship opportunities are listed below.

Emory Scholars – This prestigious award at Emory University ranges from 2/3 to full tuition, room & board, & fees. FHS can nominate only four of our most outstanding seniors for this scholarship. If you plan on attending Emory and would like to be considered for nomination, see me ASAP, as we must make a decision by October 12, 2007.

Goizueta Scholars – This award for Emory University’s Goizueta Business School supports four years of undergraduate study, and ranges from 2/3 to full tuition and fees. Goizueta Scholars will have guaranteed admission to the business school and priority access to business classes. If you would like to be considered for nomination, please see me ASAP.

Jefferson Scholars – This program at the University of Virginia seeks students who possess exceptional ability in leadership and academics and who show promise of making a significant contribution to society. The award includes 8 semesters of tuition, fees, room and board, and expenses. As with many such awards, FHS can nominate only one student for this program. If you are considering The University of Virginia, meet the above-listed qualifications, and would like to be considered for nomination, see me ASAP.

UTK Army ROTC – Scholarships valued at $40,000 are available to qualifying students. Requirements include a minimum 3.0 GPA, athletic ability, and leadership skills. Students can contact the Army ROTC department of UT at 974-5371, or email utrotc@utk.edu.

Tennessee Dept. of Commerce Essay Competition – Your essay on the topic of credit card offers could win you up to $1500 in college money. The deadline for entries is Nov. 30. See me for contest rules & essay question.

National Scholars Award – The University of Louisville offers in-state tuition for students with a 3.35 GPA and a minimum 26 ACT score. Applicants must apply by March 1. Go to admissions.louisville.edu/aid for additional information and online application.

Service to Humanity Award – Each year the Knoxville Optimist Club honors one student from each high school for their exceptional contributions to our community. If you have an extensive list of community volunteer experience, please see me for an application form before the October 10 deadline.

University of Missouri – Each year the College of Business awards over 700 scholarships totaling over $1 million to incoming students. If you are interested in UM, see me for additional information. Deadline is March 1.

Coca Cola Scholars – Each year 250 scholarships totaling $3 million are presented to well-rounded senior students. If you have demonstrated leadership, commitment to community, academic achievement, and part-time employment, you may qualify. Although the application is online only, please see me for an instructional sheet before completing your application. The deadline for applying is October 31.

AXA Achievement Scholarship – Over $670,000 will be awarded to qualifying students. Go to www.axa-achievement.com for information and online application. Deadline is Dec. 15.

Honors In Discipline – ETSU offers a range of scholarship packages for students accepted into their Honors In Discipline program. Tennessee residents may be eligible for scholarships covering full tuition and most fees for eight semesters. Application forms and information are at http://www.etsu.edu/honors/university/discipline/coordinators.asp.

C.B. Brown Scholarship – This Tennessee School of Beauty award covers full cost of attending. If you are interested in a career in cosmetology, see me for an application form. Deadline is March 31.

The Paschal Carter Scholarship– This award at Denison University is for National Merit Scholars and is valued at $34,000. Denison offers a variety of other scholarships for incoming freshmen ranging from $2000 to $34,000. For requirements and additional information call 1-800-DENISON.

University Fellows Scholarship – This program at Gardner Webb University covers full tuition, room and board. Requirements include a 3.6 GPA and a minimum 24 on the ACT. If you are interested in GWU and wish to be nominated, see me before October 15.

University of Dayton – A top ten national Catholic university, Dayton offers a range of scholarships to incoming freshmen ranging from $20,000 to $100,000. First-year applicants are automatically considered for scholarship. For details call 800-837-7433.

University Scholarships – Appalachian State University offers over $2 million to incoming freshmen. Requirements & information are available at www.firstconnections.appstate.edu . Deadline is November 15.

Quattlebaum Scholarship – This award at Presbyterian College covers full tuition, fees, room and board. A minimum 3.85 GPA and an ACT of 31 are required for this award. Deadline to apply is November 15. Presbyterian offers a range of other awards as well. If you are interested in attending Presbyterian, see me for additional information.

Clemson University National Scholars Program – Participants in this premier program receive a four-year scholarship covering tuition, fees, room and board, books, and incidental expenses. They also receive an all-expense paid summer study experience in Europe. Students who wish to be considered for this program must complete and submit the Calhoun Honors College application and supporting materials no later than January 1. Visit www.clemson.edu/cuhonors to apply or obtain additional information.

John Montgomery Belk Scholarship – This prestigious award at Davidson College is valued at over $40,000 and includes two summer stipends to pursue international study. Qualified applicants will possess the attributes of integrity, intellectual enthusiasm and ability, global awareness, and leadership potential. GPA, class rank, and rigor of courses are also considered in the selection process. FHS can nominate only one student for this award. If Davidson is your choice and you meet the above qualifications, see me no later than Oct. 31.

Robertson Scholars – This innovative program at UNC Chapel Hill & Duke University is limited to 36 scholarships per year—18 at Duke and 18 at UNC. Valued at $160,000, the Robertson Scholarship provides full tuition, special courses, summer community service opportunities in the U.S. and abroad, support for research and travel, and a laptop computer for each scholar. The program seeks applicants who have made an impact in their school and community, demonstrated innovative leadership and potential, and are at the top of their class. Learn more about the program and complete a Supplemental Materials form (in addition to the application to UNC or Duke) at www.robertsonscholars.org.

President’s Scholarship – This Georgia Tech program covers full cost of attendance and a computer stipend. The level of award offered depends upon the student’s final ranking in the scholarship competition. To apply, simply submit a complete Georgia Tech Application for Freshman Admission by October 31, 2007. No additional application form is required. Apply online at www.apply.gatech.edu. Greetings seniors! To answer a frequent question: It is NOT too early to apply to college. I strongly encourage you to complete your applications as soon as possible if you are sure which schools you would like to attend. The following list covers all the scholarship offers I have received so far. Don’t panic—additional opportunities will begin pouring in soon. The short list of college reps who have scheduled a visit is at the end of this letter. Listen for announcements for others who will schedule after this newsletter has been printed. Be sure to come by guidance & meet with reps from the colleges in which you’re interested. If you have questions please see me.

Scholarship Opportunities

Ron Brown Scholar Program – A minimum of ten African American students will be selected for this renewable scholarship valued at $40,000 for four years. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service, and demonstrate financial need. November 1 and January 9 are the deadlines. Go to www.ronbrown.org to download an application form.

Outstanding Students of America - $1000 scholarships will be awarded to students who have at least a 3.0 GPA and have demonstrated community and school involvement. A biography and essay are required. Postmark deadline is October 10, 2007. Application forms and instructions are available online at www.outstandingstudentsofamerica.com , or see me for a copy.

QuestBridge College Match – This program offers an opportunity for outstanding low-income students to gain admission and full scholarships to some of the nation’s top-ranked colleges. Deadline for applying is September 30, 2007, and the application is available at www.questbridge.org.

SAE Engineering Scholarships – Seniors who plan to earn a degree in engineering or a related science (chemistry, physics, biology, etc.) may be eligible for one of several scholarships sponsored by SAE. Requirements for most include a minimum 3.75 GPA and at least a 720 in both the math and critical reading sections of the SAT. Deadline is December 1. See me for details.

Horatio Alger Scholarship – This program provides assistance to students who have financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income) and have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity. Criteria also include commitment to pursuing a bachelor’s degree, US citizenship, involvement in extracurricular and community activities, and a minimum 2.0 GPA. The scholarships range in value from $1,000 to $10,000.
Apply online at www.horatioalger.com/scholarships no later than October 30.

Campus Door – This sweepstakes will award 100 scholarships of $1000 each. To register, go to campusdoor.com/scholarship. No deadline was given.

SunTrust Off To College – This scholarship sweepstakes awards $1000 scholarships and $250 SunTrust gift cards to winners. Applicants have fifteen chances to win—one winner is selected every two weeks from October to May. Apply online beginning September 15 at offtocollege.info.

Cappex Scholarships – Over $25,000 in awards will be given to selected students who intend to major in psychology, nursing, or computer science. To qualify, students must complete a profile on Cappex.com. In addition to being eligible for the scholarships, applicants will also find information on colleges. Deadline is January 31, 2008. Go to cappex.com to register.

Siemens Competition in Math, Science, & Technology – Students can win scholarships ranging from $10,000 to $100,000 for their original research projects. Application and registration instructions are online at www.siemens-foundation.org . Deadline is Oct. 1 .

Shout It Out Scholarship – If you could say one thing to the entire world at once, what would it be and why? Your answer to this question could win you a $1000 scholarship. Apply online by Oct. 15 at http://www.scholarshipexperts.com/apply.htx .

Optimist International Essay – Awards range from $650 to $6,000. The essay topic is “Today’s Choices Shape My Future”. See me for rules and an application before Nov. 30.
Race Relations Center Essay Contest – Your 500 word essay could be worth $200. For choice of topics and additional details, see me ASAP—essays are due Oct. 5.

Wendy’s High School Heisman – Both male and female students who exhibit excellence in the classroom, on the field, and within their communities are eligible to apply for this award program. Requirements include a 3.0 GPA and participation in at least one of the 33 sports officially sanctioned by the National Federation of State High Schools. Information and the online application are at www.wendysheisman.com . Deadline is October 1.

Danforth Scholars – This prestigious award at Washington University in St. Louis awards recipients with full or partial tuition scholarships. Qualified applicants will exhibit personal integrity, leadership, academic excellence, and will have made an exceptional contribution to his/her community. Students must be nominated for this award—if you are considering Wash U and wish to be nominated, please see me ASAP, as all completed forms must be received by Wash U no later than October 15.

Morehead-Cain Scholarship – This award covers a full four-year scholarship to UNC Chapel Hill, and is modeled after the Rhodes Scholarship. It covers tuition, books, room and board, and a laptop computer. Additionally, scholars participate in a summer enrichment program. This award targets well-rounded, dynamic young leaders. Criteria include leadership, scholarship, moral force of character, and physical vigor. FHS can nominate only one senior for this award. If you are considering UNC, have the above-listed qualifications, are in the top ten percent of your class, and have scored above 2140 on the combined portions of the SAT, see me ASAP. Deadline for receipt of all forms is Oct. 5.

U.S. Senate Youth Program – Nationally, 104 students will receive one week in our nation’s capital, all expenses paid, and a $5000 scholarship. Qualified applicants will be permanent US residents and currently serving in an elected or selected capacity in student government or a civic or educational organization. Other considerations include scholarship, leadership, and citizenship. An overall 3.0 GPA is required, and applicants shall also take a test which will serve as a basis for final selection at the school level. Only one student may be nominated by our school. If you would like to be considered, please see me ASAP.

Thomas Wolfe Scholarship – UNC Chapel Hill seeks to identify and reward students with exceptionally focused literary ability and promise. This award covers full undergraduate support. For requirements and application go to http://english.unc.edu/creative/tws . Applications will be accepted from September 1 through November 2, 2007.

Prudential Spirit of Community Award – If you have made a difference by volunteering in your community over the past year, you could win $1000 and a trip to Washington DC. See me for details; deadline is October 31.

Young Arts – Awards ranging from $100 to $10,000 are available to artists in the performing, literary, and visual arts. For information and registration, go to www.youngARTS.org before the final deadline of October 1.

Newsworthy
Carson Newman College now offers a major in film study. Required classes will include aesthetics, film and society, international cinema, and production. Internships and student projects are also part of the major.
