Farragut High School Science Lab Renovation Dedication

Thursday, October 4, 7:00 p.m. Farragut High School (FHS) will dedicate its newly renovated science lab. This project is the culmination of three years of hard work and perseverance on the part of FHS science teachers, administration, students, parents and community members.

Two years ago science teachers recognized serious science lab deficiencies and indeed hazards to students safety. An advisory committee comprised of professionals from Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL), University of Tennessee (UT) and private industry made recommendations for improvements. The community and parents were called upon for support of this endeavor.

Knox County government, Knox County Schools, and the community all joined forces to make this project a reality. Through the Farragut High School Education Foundation, under the leadership of Mr. Brian Sellers, funds were equipment required for the newly renovated lab.

An unexpected and most welcome outcome of the renovation efforts has been the creation of the FHS Science Academy and partnerships between FHS and ORNL and UT. These partnerships are providing FHS students opportunities to work side-by-side with world class research scientists within our own community. These students will be available at the Dedication Ceremony to discuss their work at ORNL and UT.

As you may know, Knox County Public Libraries are currently participating in The Big Read, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts. Libraries are encouraging residents of Knox County to read Harper Lee's timeless novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Students in Suzi Johnson's and my freshman English class are also reading this novel, and students have just completed writing essays about themes in the book.

I have contacted the Knoxville News Sentinel, and they have agreed that because of the timeliness of these essays in relation to The Big Read, they are going to publish excerpts from six of our students' essays in the October 30th issue of the newspaper, in the teen-focused "Text Me" section. In addition, the Farragut Branch library is putting together a display where all of the students' (full) essays will be available for library patrons to read. I have not yet received confirmation of the dates that this exhibit will be displayed.

Please join me in congratulating these students on their accomplishments. They have put an enormous amount of effort into these essays and are worthy of being commended!
